How to Blog About Your Culture

So far, you’ve learned how to develop an employer branding strategy, have a conversation about your culture, and make Google love you.

Today, I’m going to show you how to combine all that you’ve learned to write a killer employer branding blog.

How to Blog About Your Culture

How to blog about your culture - part 1

Of all the social media tools in your employer branding toolkit, I think blogging is hands-down the most powerful.

Most of the other social media tools we’re going to discuss in this series have limitations. Maybe you have to use a certain layout, or you can only use certain colors. On Twitter you can only write 140 characters, while YouTube only let’s you share videos.

These tools are all great at what they do, and are a valuable part of your integrated employer branding strategy. But a blog is really the central headquarters of you social media employer branding efforts.

Make Google love you (and put a face to the name)

If someone wants to learn more about your organization, the first place they go isn’t your company website. It’s Google.

When someone types your organization’s name into Google, where on that list do you want your company website, blog, Twitter and Facebook accounts to show up? The top of the first page, or at the bottom of page three?

Today, I’m going to talk to you about how to make Google love you. I’m also going to answer one of the most frequently asked questions about social media use for businesses: Do I use my own name/photo/etc. or my organization’s?

“Social” Media: How to have a conversation about your culture

conversation

I have a friend named Gary. He’s a nice enough guy, but talking to him can be really painful. Why?

He only talks about himself.

Think about the most interesting conversationalist you know. She probably asks a lot of questions. She’s funny. She shares interesting information about lots of other people and things. She doesn’t just talk about herself (chances are, she rarely talks about herself).

When you build an employer brand using social media, what you’re really trying to do is have a conversation about your culture. And the same skills that make you a great conversationalist in real life apply online.

How do you train and develop remote employees?

village_br0wser

I just moved into a new role at EMC. I’m now the Community Manager for our internal Career Community for our services group.

In plain English, that means that I’m responsible for creating a community kind of like this one, but with a focus on career development for our service folks. It’s a place to find career and development resources, connect with other people, and share ideas.

Kind of cool, right? EMC has a fantastic internal social network, EMC|One, that we can use for everything from collaborative team projects to entire social communities built around work groups, locations or functions.

With this new role, I get to put the skills I’ve developed in creating and growing Renegade HR to use inside my organization. Exciting stuff!

So, how do you train and develop remote employees?
