Social Media Changes Everything

At least, that’s what the “experts” and “gurus” want you to believe.

Don’t believe the hype.

It’s still all about connecting with people. There may be new ways to do that now, but the ideas and principles are the same.

The Social Media Guru Myth

In the last few weeks, I’ve received at least three email newsletters I never signed up for. One of them came from a self-described “social media expert.”

The idea of anyone being a “social media expert” is bogus.

At the end of the day, social media is just a collection of tools that faciliate online conversation. If you’re not a good conversationalist (both online and in real life), you’re not a social media expert. And if you are a good conversationalist, the rest is just details.

Sending someone a newsletter they never signed up for is like walking into the middle of a conversation with three people you’ve never me before and saying, “My company does blah, blah, blah. We have yada, yada, yada.”

It’s rude, and you would never do it. So why do so many people think that it’s ok to do that online?
