Who cares what Gen-Y wants?

Back in May, Fast Company Magazine wrote:

Want to keep the Gen Y’ers in your office happy? Make sure that you embrace sustainability in a very public way. A new report from Johnson Controls tells us that 18- to 25 year-olds want evidence that their employers are going beyond the minimum levels of environmental compliance by embracing all things green on an everyday basis…

The group also prefers everything from flexible and mobile ways of working to modern office spaces with “subtle art” and natural floor finishes.

My question: Who cares?

What people say they want is largely irrelevant. What they do matters a lot more.

Is Generation Y different than other generations in the workplace? Sure. Are they that they different? No, I don’t think so.

There’s no money in exploring what’s similar and common among generations. To me, that’s why a lot of focus has gone in that direction. Instead of focusing on similarities, focusing on differences.

It’s not a generations thing. It’s about setting expectations, communicating clearly, and then holding people accountable.

Over the last few years, there’s been an explosion of information about how to manage a multigenerational workforce.

There have been countless articles, seminars and books on how to keep Generation Y (aka the Millennials) engaged, and how to help Baby Boomers and Gen-X employees work with them more effectively. I think that’s all a big waste of time.

Onboarding for Gen Y (and the rest of your workforce, too)

Last week I stumbled across an awesome presentation by Jessica Lee of Fistful of Talent fame. The topic was onboarding strategies for Gen Y.

Now I’ll admit, I’m pretty damn sick of hearing about Gen Y (and I’m not the only one). I’ve written before that most of the articles on managing Millennial don’t teach managers how to effectively manage young people. They teach managers how to more effectively manage everyone. Who doesn’t want to be involved in meaningful work, be challenged but not overloaded, be provided with support on day one, and so on?

Anyways, it’s a pretty good presentation (and relatively short, too). Just remember that the strategies it offers aren’t for Gen Y. They’re for everyone.
