A few months ago, Benjamin McCall from Rethink HR invited me to be part of an exciting ebook project: What we teach. How we learn.
As the name implies, it’s a book for learning and development pros. It’s a short, easy read and features an awesome lineup of contributors.
I write a lot of ebooks.
I’ve sold a few on Renegade HR. I’ve given even more away. I also create ebooks at work as a useful handout for trainings and presentations I give.
I’ve had a few people ask me how to create them. Truth is, it’s really easy.
I use Microsoft Word. No fancy software. No expensive PDF creator or Mac-only tools. Just Microsoft Word.
Today, I wanted to give you the template I use to make my ebooks.
It has instructions built into it. It has a simple, beautiful layout, and a large left margin for scribbling notes. It has big, easy-to-read font.
When you’re done writing, just save it as a PDF using the built-in “Save to PDF” function in Word 2007 or later. If you have an earlier version of Word, download Open Office (which is free) and use that instead.

A big part of the Renegade HR philosophy is putting ideas into action.
On the interwebz, particularly in the social media space, there’s a tendancy to bounce lots of ideas around inside an echo chamber. I’ve lost track of how many tweets, blog posts and (sigh) Google Waves I’ve seen that ask some form of the question, “How can we improve HR?”
Don’t get me wrong – that’s an important question. But at some point, you need to stop talking about it and start doing something about it.
