Podcast Highlights

This old encompassing infrastructure of everything that touches every employee has to be called HR… it’s not working.

HR tends to take on this idea that we have to deliver a great employee experience. It’s not up to HR to deliver a great employee experience. It’s up to the management team.

I think one way [to recruit] that has been proven to fail is behavior-based interviewing.

  1. What? No hateful comments? Shoot!

“God that girl is an idiot.”

There you go. I started it.

  2. Laurie, I think that was implied. ;)

I’m hoping this sparks more of a conversation later. Maybe once you send some of your troops this way… (hint hint)

  3. Chris, I was an anthro major too, I wonder if that’s becoming a source for HR people. It does draw on a lot of the same interests and skills.

I’ve listened to this twice, and around the Zappos conversation, Laurie is talking about how work used to be historically part of a family environment, and it cuts off. Maybe you just got sick of listening to her Chris but I doubt it, y’all seemed to have a good thing going.

I’m on firefox, I wonder if that’s the problem?

  4. @Franny – I just gave it a listen. It does hang at that point, but picked back up for me very quickly. I’m wondering if Go Daddy’s servers are just a little overwhelmed by the streaming. You may have better luck downloading and listening that way. I’m terribly sorry you’re having trouble hearing it, though.

And I think a lot of anthropology overlaps with HR. I consider Renegade HR pros to be anthropologists of the business world!

  5. An idiot? Never. Out there in the traditional HR sense, sure but that’s why I love ya!

This converation really got me thinking about my own HR beliefs and I find that I agree with both of you (hows that for being neutral-what can I say I’m a Libra).

I’m a long term HR generalist so of course I see value in what I do. But I also believe in utilizing experts as I hate benefits, LOA, comp, recruiting, etc. (how is it I’m still in HR?). I too am tired of having to deal with employee’s personal life that constantly gets brought into the work place and than they (both managers and ee’s) look to HR as the parent to sort it all out. I agree with Laurie, it’s a contract- work for a paycheck and yes we can have some fun and enjoy each others company along the way.

Enjoyed the convo and look forward to round 2 (come on Chris you’re up for it!).

  7. Are you yanking my chain?!! I would be honored to send some questions your way to see what ya think! Truly enjoyed the interview and feel a follow- up is necessary!
