How to present from your iPod

If you give trainings or presentations, one of the things you need to worry about is what to do if the computer you’re using bugs out.

Some presenters bring an extra laptop with them. Others bring a flash drive and hope there’s a spare laptop available.

Today, I want to show you how you can actually present directly from your iPod.

(Hat tip to Garr Reynolds over at Presentation Zen for showing this trick.)

PS: Sorry for the video quality. I don’t have screen-capture software yet, so I had to hold my digital camera while I was talking.

  1. Open up the presentation in PowerPoint.
  2. Select File > Save As > Other Format. Choose JPEG or PNG (I think PNG provides better quality). Choose a location to save your files.
  3. Click Save. Select Every Slide (not Only Current Slide).
  4. Open up the folder where the pictures saved. Add a zero (’0′) before the number in slides number 1 through 9.
  5. Cut-and-Past the folder with the images into the folder that your iPod syncs photos from.
  6. Plug-in your iPod and open iTunes.
  7. From your iPod menu in iTunes, click the Photos tab.
  8. Make sure you have All Folders selected (or if you only sync certain folders, that you’ve selected the folder with the slides). Click Sync.

That’s it!

To play the slides on a projector or TV, you need to pick up an Apple Composite AV Cable for your iPod. They cost about $50.
