Several months ago, Luigi Danakos suggested I write a post on how to get noticed when you’re relatively new in your career.
I said, “Yes! That’s a great idea, Luigi!” And here we are months later, and I’m finally writing it. Sorry for the delay, dude!
Today, I’m going to let you in on the secret to making a name for yourself.
Help people.
That’s it. If you want to make yourself known, help people, whenever and however you can.
Volunteer for projects. If you don’t know of any projects, find some. Invite people who work on things you’re interested in to coffee and tell them you want to get to know more about what they do (seriously, no one ever says no!). Then, ask them what they’re working on, and if there’s anything you can do to get involved.
Create your own projects. See something that could be done better? Fix it! Don’t wait for someone else to make it happen. Pitch your idea to whoever you need to pitch it to, get some people to help, and make it happen.
There’s a lot of “personal branding experts” out there who talk about owning your Google search results and blogging and Twitter. That stuff’s all great, but if you’re not actually doing things worth talking about, it doesn’t matter.
Want to get noticed? Do great stuff that helps people. They’ll talk.

Amen, brother. Too many people spend time talking about talking and not enough about doing. I really, really like this advice. Do things worth talking about. It is that simple.
Great Post! Thanks! I’m working on a few new ideas: blogs, designs, sites etc. I would need someone with good wrtting skills! Let’s collaborate ;) Contact me: @byrn3
@Frank – Thanks for the support!
@Andrew – Glad you found it useful. I’m a bit maxed out at the moment, but thanks for the offer!
