Helping employees achieve “flow”

Have you ever achieved a state of flow at work? You know, one of those moments when you’re in the zone and everything clicks and you’re doing absolutely amazing work.

There was an article on flow last month on the AMEX OPEN Forum.

As is typical of articles like this, it included a list of ten things you can do to achieve flow at work. The two that really jumped out at me:

  • Forget about multitasking.
  • Get absorbed in something that is bigger than you.

It’s really about looking at both of those in conjunction.

Find work that adds value to your organization or the people who work in it, and throw yourself fully into it. Set aside large blocks of uninterrupted time to grind out amazing work. Let the phone go to voicemail. Close your email application.

Then go do amazing things.

I know that’s probably not as easy (or realistic?) for a lot of HR people, but you owe it to yourself to find the time to do great work. What kind of great work?

If you are in charge of others, set the conditions for them to experience flow in the workplace.

That’s Renegade HR right there. Helping your people do amazing things that drive the business.

Find flow for yourself, and then use it to create an environment that enables others to do awesome things.

  1. Chris,

I read the article you cite in this post and it’s very interesting. I’ve also seen the concept referred to in a book called “Now, Discover Your Strenths” – I think you might enjoy the book if you haven’t already read it. The other is “StrengthFinder 2.0″ – which came after NDYS. The concept behind these books is very powerful and compelling… so much so, that it has changed my life.

    Thanks for the post!

    Michael

  2. I agree completely. As a manager, or HR person, you need to figure out how to help people achieve flow. Your job is to improve the system that allows people to contribute to the organization. As such you need to work on creating systems that allow people to achieve flow.
