A few weeks ago, Frank Roche from Know HR posted a list of 10 Ways to Be Bold in HR Today. It’s a great list.
Over on the Renegade HR Facebook Page, I asked members what they thought HR pros could start doing right now to be better at their job. I got back some great answers.
Lisa Macabu wrote,
I also think that HR folks should start incorporating new communication methods/vehicles (e.g. podcasts, vodcasts, flash e-mails, social networking sites) with employees. Memos, e-mails and payroll stuffers aren’t effective. It’s all about multiple impressions so the message gets through.
As someone who thinks far too many memos and emails just get ignored by employees, I completely agree.
Victorio Milian suggested,
Never stop learning.
Tracy Tran says,
Go to other networking events that have a different departments and interact.
Amy Morris had innovation in mind when she wrote,
I’d suggest finding ways that you can interact with others in your department, make yourself cross functional- it helps to see the larger picture and can trigger fantastic ideas.
And Lisa Palmer Wolf offered some great advice on how HR can play a more effective role as a business consultant (even when you work for an organization), noting,
By knowing and understanding the business and what our leaders must deal with (what politics, obstacles, etc. are in their day to day interactions) makes us more effective HR consultants. If I can speak to my leaders with knowledge of their operations (also means know who their key players are), I am viewed as more credible. I contribute to their decisions and strategies through proactive consulting versus reactive. When you are truly “at the decision table” your impact is greater. You take your business knowledge and elevate it through HR actions.
