The Return of the Renegade HR Podcast

It’s been a while since I’ve done a podcast here at Renegade HR (four months, to be specific). Today, I wanted to let you know that they’re coming back.

Renegade HR Podcasts are a series of interviews and how-tos about recruiting great people and helping them do amazing things.

I have short conversations with some really smart people, with a focus on what you as an HR pro can do to become more of a rockstar than you already are. I already have three recorded, edited and ready to go live:

  • Lance Haun from Rehaul and I discuss the multigenerational workforce.
  • Paul Hebert from Incentive Intelligence shares his insights on developing incentive programs and motivating employees.
  • Mike Ferdinandi, former SVP of HR for CVS Caremark (full disclosure: he’s also my dad), has a conversation with me about organizational culture.

The first podcast with Lance kicks off next Wednesday. I’m hoping to publish one or two a month.

These take a bit more time to create than blog posts do, though, so if things get too crazy, you may see a bit of a gap between podcasts. Sorry!

If you subscribe to Renegade HR, you’ll already receive updates when they come out. If you have an iPod, though, and want them to automatically download, you can subscribe via iTunes as well.

Book Review: How to Self-Destruct

how-to-self-destruct

How to Self-Destruct is a career guide in reverse.

Most career guides teach you how to succeed. In How to Self-Destruct, author and leadership consultant Jason Seiden teaches you how to fail. (Amazon affiliate link)

Today, I’m going to review the book. I’ll share my favorite insights, as well as a few things that I kind of bugged me.

How to Self-Destruct

How to Self-Destruct is an easy read. I tore through the book in about two days, casually reading on nights and weekends.

The book is organized by where you are in your career: Just starting out, new to middle-management, senior management, and so on.

Each chapter gives you a sure fire recipe to ruin your career, and then includes a robust section on what to do if you want to have a successful, thriving career instead.

Here are my favorite pieces of advice…

The Company Yearbook

Frank Roche over at KnowHR wrote an interesting post last week on creating a company yearbook.

Apparently, he has hardcover books made for his small HR communications firm, iFractal, with all of the pictures they’ve taken over the course of the year. I think that’s awesome!

But it got me thinking… You don’t need to wait until the end of the year to do something like this.

How to Create Video Job Postings

canon-powershot

A few months ago, I mentioned that I’d love to see more companies (or really just any company) embrace video job postings.

Today, I’m going to show you how to create your own video job posting.

(NOTE: If your culture sucks, ignore this article.)

Book Review: Drive by Daniel Pink

Drive by Daniel Pink is a must-read business book of 2010.

After seeing Dan’s Ted talk last month, I sent his PR guy an email. He was kind enough to provide me with a free copy to review.

Here’s the summary: There’s a gap between what science knows about human motivation and what business does.

Drive is a roadmap to understanding when external, carrot-and-stick management works, and when it can actually hurt employee performance.
